Garden Featuring Composite Decking
“We changed our minds a few times during the process and never felt like that was a problem. Helpful advice throughout and design layouts that feel right for the space and met our budget.” Graham & Lynn G.
This garden is an example of a project consisting of different zones within a larger, established garden, rather than a complete garden design. As such, advice was sought on what decking to use for the deck areas the client had in mind, what layout to adopt and how to plan for adjacent planting areas.
For the area to the side of the house, (pictured above), Millboard Enhanced Grain composite decking was specified in their Coppered Oak colourway. Millboard is probably the best composite available, it’s completely non-slip & easy to maintain.
We designed a staggered raised bed using sleepers, which are both attractive & relatively low cost as well as suiting a country style garden setting very well.

Additional Decked Area
Our clients loved the composite decking area at the side of the house so much, we were invited to design a further decked area at the rear of the garden.
Millboard Enhanced Grain decking was used again here, this time in their Smoked Oak colourway. This colour is very versatile & suits many property types, whether new-build or older properties like this one.
Particular care has to be taken when specifying steps with a garden. We like to use maximum risers of 175mm wherever possible & minimum treads of 400mm. There are exceptions to the rule, but safe access is always paramount.
Mediterranean Style Shingle Area & Seating

Elsewhere in this beautiful garden, an underused area was replaced with a Mediterranean Style Shingle garden, bordered with Italian cypress trees and inter-planted with ornamental grasses.
The Mediterranean-inspired shingle garden is structured around a bold interplay of form, texture and movement. Strong vertical accents of Italian cypress punctuate the planting, their architectural silhouettes contrasting with the softer, flowing character of ornamental grasses. Set within a sweeping gravel landscape, the composition evokes the dry gardens of southern Europe while remaining naturalistic, drought-tolerant and richly textured throughout the seasons.
Beyond the rhythm of ornamental grasses and upright Italian cypress, the garden opens into a secluded seating area framed by a sculptural backdrop of upright oak sleepers. The curved timber wall softens the geometry of the planting scheme, creating a sheltered, contemplative space that feels both architectural and natural — a quiet destination within the Mediterranean-inspired garden.
